“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”
- Helen Keller
Visionaries often pave the way towards the future, to the betterment and development of society. Vision requires planning and imagination, as well as experience. Sort of like a ship, steering into the right direction of their planned destination. Vision may be a word that correlates with seeing, but I interpret vision with being able to use the mind’s eye. The mind is highly creative and imaginative, so to have vision means using this to motivate yourself, a group, even a country, a thing like a ship, somewhere. People who do not have vision, values, and a purpose, do not have much fulfillment in life.
I think Helen was speaking about herself in this quote. She was both deaf and blind, but that did not stop her for fighting for women suffrage, being an author, and a leader. The quote means that if she were a person, she’d rather be blind and have a vision, meaning that she’d rather have a reason, a purpose to live for. In the human experience, hope is powerful. Event today, we hope to see some things change for the better, we hope for the best of this world. We imagine how things can be if we would contribute to this good cause, if we can be leaders for a cause. Vision doesn’t mean seeing, it means dreaming of something. Dreaming of a good thing, dreaming of peace, equality. A major part of living are these dreams, are these improvements on ourselves, our communities, and this world, no matter how small, as long as we put our passion into it. As long as we have dreams, we have something to live for.
